I have been professionally teaching music for the past 12 years now.
My first teaching job was at a federal university in my home town João Pessoa - Brazil. At the age of 22, after winning an open contest for a tenure position at UFPB (Federal University of Paraiba), I was hired as a resident musician and drums/percussion instructor for the extension music program. This program was open to anyone from the community who was interested in learning a musical instrument. During my tenure at UFPB, I had the chance to teach many different people from different backgrounds, social class, genres and ages. Besides teaching at UFPB, I had the chance to present workshops and clinics in different parts of the world. Since I moved back to NYC, I have worked as a drum instructor for Guitar Center and as a teaching artist for a public school in the Bronx, again, teaching to a very diverse audience.
I believe learning an instrument goes beyond mastering a set of skills; it involves discipline, dedication, concentration, respect and consciousness. As an educator I try to involve all these aspects without leaving the fun behind, making sure the whole process is pleasant and joyful for everyone! Dennis
